Description
Twenty-four Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) and Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) members came together during ALA Midwinter 2011 in San Diego to participate in a discussion forum titled, "Answering the Young Adult Reference Question." This discussion was prompted by a point of conversation that I've had with many colleagues over the past several years: Why aren't there more organized forums within our professional associations to support the interests of public and academic library staff who provide reference service to young adults? After all, homework help is a reference service. On the bright side, over the past decade we have seen more and more professional publications address this topic, along with more research that seeks to explain the information-seeking habits of young adults and offer best practices. I believe that now is the right time for YALSA and RUSA to provide a forum for library staff to share their experiences and exchange ideas for improving reference service for young adults.
